Our Ministry Areas
Worship and Music
At the heart of our experience as a congregation is the weekly gathering to hear the Word of God, share the Lord’s Supper, and enjoy the community of faith. It is in this gathering that we discover anew who Jesus is and what God is up to in the world. Our worship follows the pattern of the ancient Christian liturgy, rotates with the cycle of church seasons, and incorporates both traditional and contemporary musical styles. The weekly service incorporates the efforts of dozens of people, from lay readers, greeters, and broadcast technicians to cantors, choirs, and communion servers. It is a true “work of the people,” all to create a time and a place for heaven and earth to meet and for our hearts to be filled with God’s gifts of truth and peace.
Faith Formation
From the very beginning, those who had been baptized into Christ Jesus devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. From Sunday morning Bible classes to weekday book clubs and discussion groups, from catechism classes for youth and adults to daily email devotions sent to each member’s Inbox, the Word of God and the church’s teaching provide the foundation for our faith at Christ The King and for living out that faith in the world. As members grow in their understanding of Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, and of the Kingdom of God that was at the heart of his mission and life, they discover a renewed identity and purpose for their own lives and are equipped to be agents of God’s justice and forgiveness in the world.
Community Inreach
The Christian faith cannot be fully lived apart from the community of God’s people on earth, the Church. The Church has been likened to a Body – the Body of the crucified, risen, and ascended Jesus – and all the members of a congregation are a part of that Body and knit together spiritually just as a human body is put together and interconnected physically. In the Body each part has a unique gift to offer and a particular role to play, and, as a Body, all parts work together for the good of the whole. Promoting the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of all members; staying connected and engaged with each other; bearing one another’s burdens through prayer and assistance; and providing opportunities for sharing and enjoying life beyond worship and study – these are all an integral part of congregational ministry and life at Christ The King.
Community Outreach
Jesus came “not to be served, but to serve,” and to bring God’s dominion of love and justice to earth. At the end of each worship service at Christ The King, the congregation is sent forth to live out this good news, to serve in Jesus’ name, and to strive for justice and peace in our local community and in the world. Our members have put this call into action in an amazing variety of ways, from tying hundreds of quilts each year for local and overseas use to helping keep a local food pantry stocked, from building houses in El Salvador through Habitat for Humanity, to sponsoring a refugee family and helping them get a new start here in Virginia. Over the past year, the congregation has deepened their awareness and response to the significant social issues of our time: racial reconciliation, climate change, gender and sexuality, women’s equality, and the legacy of indigenous people in North America. In each of these challenging areas, we follow the One who welcomed and cared for all without question and who gave his life for the sake of a new way of being human in the world.
